New Button Accordions
Although here in the United States the button accordion has often been thought of as the "poor cousin" to the more well-known piano accordion, it has always been a very popular type of accordion in the rest of the world. Often called the "button box", "squeezebox", or "melodeon", it is the direct descendant of the original accordions first developed in the early 19th century; each treble button gives a different note on the push and pull and follows a major scale pattern. Button accordions generally have 1 to 3 rows of treble buttons and 2 to 12 bass buttons. The keys of the rows are generally a fourth or a half tone apart. In the latter instance, this provides the player with a fully chromatic treble range. The treble or melody side of the button box has from 1 to 4 sets of reeds, sometimes with stops or switches to control combinations of reedsets for different tonal characteristics. Button accordions typically weigh from 4 to 12 pounds.
