Chris Droney - The Flowing Tide
Disc Three of the Clare Set. Chris Droney, a farmer from Bellharbour, near the Burren area of north Clare, came to the forefront of Irish music in 1956, when he won the Fleadh Cheoil All Ireland Concertina Championship at Ennis, with further All-Ireland concertina championships in 1959, 1960, and so on until 1967, when he retired "to give the others a chance"! Concerts in the USA followed, and Chris was much in demand for house dances all over Clare. Much of his repertoire came from his father, and his dance-oriented, driving style, free of over-decoration, is pure Clare playing. This CD release includes many extra tunes from the original Tams & Wayne 1974 recordings.Anglo Concertina

Kitty Hayes
& Peter Laban - They'll
Be Good Yet
The CD captures the music of two musicians: Kitty Hayes on concertina - clearly relaxed and at home in her own kitchen where the recordings took place - and Peter Laban playing flat pitched pipes, complementing Kitty's typical - older generation - Clare style of playing, creating a multi-layered blend of concertina and pipes with a strong 'live' feeling to it. As Tom Munnelly puts it in his introduction to the CD: 'This CD catches the musical understanding that Kitty and Peter share with one another. The music is stately and relaxed at the same time. It eschews flashiness totally and gets the skin of the tunes, a conversation between friends, never an argument or a race. If you wish to hear Clare music as it should be played, you will be hard-pressed to find a better example' -- Claddagh Anglo Concertina

John Kelly - Irish Traditional Concertina &
Fiddle Music
Disc Four of the Clare Set. John Kelly was born in the district of Rehy West, County Clare, and for over thirty years was a force in Irish music - he was a member of Seán Ó Riada's Ceoltóirí Cualainn, of the Castle Ceilidh Band, and of Ceoltóirí Laighean, and regular musician at respected Dublin sessions. John's fiddling is in the relaxed Clare style and his concertina playing is spikier, with subtle variations of notes, the occasional harmonic effect, and again that off-beat emphasis. John taught at the Willie Clancy Scoil Éigse, and supported the Tradition Club held on Wednesdays at Slattery's, just a few doors away from his Dublin home: he was recorded by John Tams and Neil Wayne in January 1974 and by Tony Engle and Patrick Hayes in March & April 1975, and extra tracks are here included from these sessions. Mary MacNamara - Open Hearth (with Andrew MacNamara)
Those familiar with the subtle, sparsely decorated, and gently paced music of Mary MacNamara will find this recording very much in the same vein as her previous two solo albums. Although her brother Andrew's accordion playing can be quite different in style, i.e., complex in ornamentation and faster paced, here he matches Mary's style note for note, which results in a series of charming unaccompanied duets. Mick, Louise
& Michelle Mulcahy - Notes
from the Heart
Peadar Ó Riada remarks in the notes for this album that it is the sweetness and the tunefulness of the family’s ensemble playing that is most striking, and he is right. Their music is full of melody and warmth, and is firmly rooted in the west Limerick and Sliabh Luachra styles, but also has a Clare influence. The Mulcahys play a dazzling array of instruments on the album; Mick plays accordion and melodeon, Louise plays concert flute and uilleann pipes and Michelle plays fiddle, concertina, harp and piano. Accompaniment is provided by Cyril O’Donoghue on bouzouki and guitar, and by Tommy Hayes on bodhrán. Button Accordion

Micheál
Ó Raghallaigh - Inside Out
The second album from the man who made a triumphant debut some years ago with ‘The Nervous Man’. This one is every bit as good as his first, an accomplishment that is worthy of note, given its predecessor’s astonishing mix of technical perfection, sheer good taste and exuberant artistry of the highest order. Accompaniment is by Michael Rooney, by now almost as ubiquitous as John Blake, Eoghan O’Brien and Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill. No home should be without one. -- Claddagh Anglo Concertina

O’Rourke has been a well-known frequenter of the Belfast session scene for quite a time and O’Kane, originally from Dungiven in Derry, has moved there in recent years. Jimmí O
Se - Malairt Poirt O
Fionntra
Jimmí is 90 years of age. He plays the accordion with an ease that would be a credit to someone in their fifties, and with the proper swing for the dances of his native West Kerry. Listeners should be aware that most of this recording consists of conversation, sometimes with music playing behind it. The conversation is in beautiful, articulate Kerry Irish, as concise and intelligent as his music, and like his music it is easy on the ears. It consists of personal reminiscence, folk tales, and history (including Lindbergh's transatlantic flight). For anyone who speaks that dialect, it's an undiluted pleasure, and can also be recommended to learners. -- Compass Records Button Accordion

Sharon Shannon
& Friends - Libertango
[Shannon] continues to defy and redefine musical boundaries with her latest album, the stunningly diverse Libertango. A year’s worth of touring and recording with Sinead O’Connor has led Shannon to rediscover the role of female vocalists in her own music, resulting in several stirring encounters here.
Instrumentally, Shannon draws from an ambitious and intriguing range of influences. While staying firmly grounded in the agile beauty of her traditional Irish and Scottish roots, Shannon embraces blues (on a haunting cover of Fleetwood Mac’s timeless Albatross"), Arabian, jazz, and Latin sources. Encompassing instrumental and vocal features, traditional and eclectic styles, and a wide range of virtuoso accompanists, Libertango is the definitive album from one of Irish music’s most renowned performers." -- Compass Records Button Accordion

John Williams
& Dean Magraw - Raven
"This loose-limbed Raven soars effortlessly, Chicagoan John Williams, founder member of Solas and a man who's on fluent speaking terms with concertina, accordion, flute, low whistle and piano, brings a zest to both traditional and original tunes, and he's found his spiritual equal in guitarist Dean Magraw, who's a mean draw when it comes to tune writing, too. There's enough space in between this pair's playing to let the oxygen molecules truly ignite, whether in the company of a Kerry barndance (The Gypsy Princess) or a madcap foray onto the unknown (Trippin' Into Eden). What matters most of all, though, is the duo's utter confidence in the music's ability to carve its own identity without a hint of posturing. An inspired pairing." -- -Siobhan Long, The Irish Times, April 25, 2006 Anglo Concertina, Button Accordion

Clifton Chenier - 60 Minutes with the King of Zydeco
60 MINUTES collects some of the best work Chenier put out on Arhoolie (and there has been quite a bit of it). All of it bears the hallmarks of Chenier's style, a soulful, high-energy party music that boogies as fiercely as any New Orleans R&B, yet flaunts its regional, Creole-centric hallmarks via clattering washboards, pumping accordion, and French-language singing. Since 60 MINUTES covers a large chunk of Chenier's recording career, it serves as an excellent retrospective of the zydeco legend. Piano Accordion

Henry Doktorski - Vaudeville Accordion Classics: The Complete
Works of Guido Deiro
Guido Deiro, the Italian-American accordion virtuoso-- frequently called "The Great Deiro"-- was of paramount importance in the popularization of the accordion in the early 20th century. The first accordionist to perform on the Vaudeville stage (1910), he was also the first accordionist to make sound recordings (Edison Wax Cylinders, 1911). For many years Deiro was a headline attraction at the great vaudeville houses throughout America and abroad, and made more than 100 recordings for the Columbia record company. On Bridge's 2-CD set, Henry Doktorski's sparkling performances of Deiro's music quickly confirm the reason for Deiro's immense popularity. -- Bridge Records ( 2 CD set) Piano Accordion

Madagascar - Forced March
And now for something completely different. A "world-weary" accordion chants a mournful tune against a background of musical saw and glockenspiel. "So take it for granted that Madagascar sound like street music from a mythical, lugubrious Eastern European city stranded somewhere between the time of the Magyars and the time of the Soviet Union and dig a little deeper. As you slowly get acquainted with this music and its careful rhythms, its focus on repetition of phrases as a means to beauty, its sometimes aridly intellectual (as opposed to visceral) bent, you may notice that this is post rock as pre-rock, that if you took these songs and performed them on more conventional instruments you'd have something not miles away from Tortoise or a vocal-less, gentler Spiderland." -- Ian Mathers, Stylus Magazine For tracks and more info, see the band's website. And what a great idea that was! With accordion, piano, concertina, mountain dulcimer, vocal effects and various sorts of percussion, they have managed to create a rich and unusual sound, bringing a unique experience to the contra dance community in which they play. Jeremiah McLane
& Ruthie Dornfeld - Hummingbird
With a mix of courtly and spirited dance numbers, the depth and skill of these two players is matched only by their obvious love and respect for the traditional music they play. Both world-renowned virtuosos on their respective instruments, accordionist Jeremiah McLane and fiddler Ruthie Dornfeld can play anything—from French Musette, Irish reels, Argentine tangos, to Cajun two steps—it makes no difference. Each style and composition is approached with the same fire and passion, often with the vigor evident as a hummingbird flaps it’s wings (the inspiration for the title perhaps?). Unless you’ve access to a time machine, you’re not likely to find more satisfying renditions of these beautiful traditional tunes.-- Dirty Linen, Oct/Nov 2003 Piano Accordion
